mandatory update # 3 !

Hey all you literary people! (and whoever else is bored enough to read my rambling and weird thoughts)

This will be my last update for a wile- until Friday that is- this will be my last mandatory update(i think) and that ll be OK. keep commenting and voting on my poll. on a personal note before i get to my book I am UBERHAPPY!!!!! (ash-you know!! and so do certain people here at my house! ) anyway....
Today's book is called The Forbidden daughter by Shobhan Bantwal. Set in modern day India, it is the perfect fusion of modern life and tradition.
This book is about Isha and Nikhil Tilak. They have one gorgeous daughter named Pryia, and are expecting another baby soon.
In India it is illegal to have the OBGYN tell what the gender of a baby is, for fear that in a male centred society, if its a girl.an illegal abortion will take place. Basically- no abortion and no telling if its a boy or girl.
Now, Isha and Nikhil, are a modern Indian couple, and when the OBGYN offers to tell them if its a boy or girl (illegally) the have him tell them. Its a girl! they are so happy! Then the Dr. makes a mistake, he offers to do an abortion! This upsets Isha obviously, but Nikhil gets really mad! (the back of the book calls it a rage) in fact, he goes so far as to threaten the Dr with telling the police!
Isha and Nikhil live with his parents as is customary in India, and as his parents are way way way traditional, they favor male sons over females. They basically ignore 5 year old Pryia in favor of her 6 and 7 year old male cousins. When Nikhil and Isha tell Nikhils parents that Isha is expecting a girl, they flat out forbid Isha to have this baby.
Well, Isha refuses to have the abortion (of course) and this makes her in-laws hate her like a million times more then they already do.
But when Nikhil turns up horribly murdered (gee- i wonder who could that have been?) the in-laws constant nagging becomes to much and a very pregnant Isha takes Pryia and leaves. She was a spoiled kid who has never learned to fend for herself, but if learning that means taking care of her children then by (some Indian god....idk) she will!
While Isha was pregnant, she ran into a "holy man" who basically says that the new baby will bring light into her life,( she does end up naming the baby Diya-light) and that Pryia will be a grate healer. This guy also said that the baby will be born on the harvest moon, an auspicious day. These all come true by the way...
She moves in with the Nuns that teach the school that Pryia goes to. Isha pays for her stay by helping the nuns until the baby comes. She stays just long enough to have the baby, and rent an apartment. She stays on at Pryia's school (for money this time) and the doctor that delivered her baby (not the one with the nice medical practice were he kills babies-this one comes to the convent to give free medical care to the orphans that also live and go to school there-and hes HOT! ) she rents 2 apartments and rents one out for more income, the discovery of a large insurance policy that her husband took out days before his murder(hum....did he know?) and a bank deposit box full of valuables (and other things!) helps with the financial part of things.
OK, so things are going as well as they can be-but Isha is dieing to know who killed her husband! she obviously suspects the Dr. baby killer but,has no proof . Until, some of the papers in the safe deposit box turns out to be records of abortions done by Dr. evil, .... in a mad fit of rage, Isha accuses the evil Dr of killing babies and her husband. This puts Isha and her children's life in danger. ..... to find out how all this ends up.....either leave me a note, or read this book!
This is a great book to make you think,... not make you feel good. In this book you will think about, being pro life, women's rights Indian culture and ethics in general.
Shobhan Bantwal has written at least one other book, called The Dowry Bride. It is a book i want to read soon...when i get the time, because I enjoyed The forbidden Daughter so much. One of the best impulse buys ever!
If you like this book you might also like "the abortionists daughter" by....someone whose name i don't have in front of me.....sorry! i liked the half i listened to....i accidentally deleted it before i got to the end.... all technology hates me you see, so this was only to be expected. also.... i am very pro-life so, you can see why i like this book, and you all have a right to know my biases when they come up...
see yalls in cyberspace and see ya laters!
